Math Fun Day #1 - Pennies, a Princess, Pirates and Soda

Yesterday we had our first #mathfunday through google hangouts, and it was awesome! @sweenwsweens, @j_lanier, @wahedabug, @JustinAion and @occam98 got together and solved 3 interesting problems, discussed teaching methods, came up with extensions and of course joked around a bunch. Join us for our next math fun day Thursday, May 30th at 9 PM EST. Come with a compelling problem to share if you can find one.

Math Fun Day 1 Problem #1: A Penny a day...

Problem #1:  You get one penny per day for life.  After how many years will your money have the most value, considering inflation is roughly 2.5%?

Bonus: If you saved the pennies up for 100 years what would the value of your money be?
Pretty sad right?  Enjoy your lunch.  Pennies are pretty much the worst.

Math Fun Day 1 Problem #2: The Castle and the Princess Problem

Math Fun Day 1 Problem #3: The Pirate Game

Five pirates are deciding how to split up 100 gold coins. Pirate 5 must propose a plan to split up the coins.  All pirates will then vote on the plan.  If the plan receives a majority vote, they split up the coins and go about their plundery ways.  If pirate 5's plan loses the vote, he has to walk the plank and pirate 4 proposes a plan with only 4 pirates remaining.  The process repeats until a plan is accepted. Pirates follow theses rules:

  1. No pirate will make a vote that will result in his or her death.
  2. All pirates want to maximize their own gold.
  3. If a pirate will get the same deal for themselves later down the line, they will vote against it the first time so one of their fellow pirates  has to walk the plank.
So, without getting too far into it what pirate do you think you want to be?
...
Too bad you're pirate 5. What plan do you propose to live and maximize your gold?

YARRRR!

Extensions: Add more pirates!
Add even more pirates!(More than 100)
